The Paul J. Rainey Wildlife Sanctuary in southwestern Louisiana's Vermillion Parish is the oldest Audubon nature preserve and one of the organization's most ecologically significant. Rainey Sanctuary, covering 26,000 acres or 40 square miles, is a platform for demonstrating ecologically sustainable management of Louisiana's vast but disappearing coastal marshes. Louisiana has two active Audubon chapters of volunteer members, one based in Baton Rouge and another based in New Orleans. The chapters are working hand-in-hand with Audubon staff members on bird and habitat conservation projects.
